House Notes – Halls Haven

The house, although in suburbia is totally off grid. It has Rain Water Tanks, a Grey Water Treatment plant and Solar PV Systems with Off Grid Batteries that power the whole house. It also has Solar Hot Water.

The house has been constructed on a 2200 m2 block with energy savings in mind, and is not connected to the Grid for power, sewerage or water supply. The home has north facing living rooms for winter warm. It is constructed with a steel frame, brick walls and Colourbond roofing with an extra high ceiling which adds to the light and airy atmosphere in the rooms.

The house has 10kw of Solar Panels connected to two Battery Storage units (Samsung SDI AIO & Alpha OF-5 AIO) each with 10kWh or larger storage capacity to run the electrical items in the home.

It also has an Ecosmart solar hot water system.

Lights are low energy LED fittings throughout the home with individually Solar Powered LED Out-door Lighting.

The home is fully fitted with extra thick installation (50mm with density of 11 kg/m2) in the walls and roof space to keep a more constant temperature in the house during summer and winter and to save energy.

Window glazing is 10.38mm thick for insulation and sound proofing.

Large stacker doors open off the lounge and dinning room onto the outdoor living deck area, constructed from Eco Wood flooring, at the Eastern end of the house is for outdoor dinning and lounging in comfort. There is ducted air conditioning with settings for two areas, but it is rarely used due to the thermal control of the home.

Two 22,500L rainwater tanks have been installed to allow us to be off the water grid and is plumbed throughout the house. The toilets, shower heads and water pump are low flow

The Ecosafe wastewater treatment and septic sprinkler system from the septic is pumped out into the front garden. Termicide Pest barrier has been installed to cover the house for pest prevention. Most of the gardens have been planted out with native trees and plants to save on water usage, along with an extensive veggie garden for fresh and organic vegetable for the owners’ table. The house is not connected to any council or local authority services, therefore we pay no electrical bill, no water charges and no sewage fees.
