Yaegl House 2018

House Notes – Yaegl House

Yaegl House is a novel restoration of a 65-year-old mid-century family home (designed by Studio Nine and rebuilt by ODM Group) in the quiet foothills of Adelaide. Despite the architects being awarded an OBE for services to architecture at the time it was built, it was only one auction-bid away from demolition in 2015.

The house began as a home for a young married couple in 1952 and was extended again in 1956. Then in 2016, with only a very small extension, the current owners managed to increase the living space by almost 20% – with only a 5% increase in footprint.

The house is large with a flexible floor plan, yet fittings are modest and thoughtful. Its unique orientation on the block and maximum insulation provides significant comfort and cost savings. The intent was to create an aspirational home to showcase sustainable leadership in the larger-home market. The dining and living spaces open up to an insulated, covered-roof deck, designed to maximise engagement with the outdoors.

The house has:

  • Restored original steel windows (now double-glazed)
  • Recycled timber structural walls, flooring, cladding and panelling
  • Light-coloured exterior paintwork
  • A 5kW solar array on the flat roof (soon to include battery storage)
  • Ceiling fans
  • 20,000L water storage
  • Vegetable garden and composting
  • Native (and native food) plantings
  • Recycled brick extension
  • LED and recycled lighting
  • Food pantry to minimise trips to the supermarket
  • Super-efficient Stovax wood heating.
