Burnett House 2018

House Notes – Burnett House

Burnett House is a National Trust property designed by Beni C.G. Burnett, an Australian Government principal architect to NT in the 1930s who is famous for his robust and liveable buildings most suitable to Darwin’s climate. Burnett’s designs were inspired by the tropical colonial bungalow architecture of Malaysia and Singapore. Burnett House is a 1938 “K Type” designed specifically for the tropics to maximize air flow and ventilation. The design also incorporates ‘sleeping verandahs’ which take full advantage of cooling breezes during hot tropical nights.
