Avalon Off-Grid House 2018

House Notes – Avalon Off-Grid House

Our aim was to create a fully-electric, off-grid home that minimised the impact on the environment, whilst not compromising our lifestyle.

It’s a pre-fab, modular house, custom-designed for the site. The house arrived in six sections, on trucks driven all the way from Melbourne.

The heart of the house is the edible permaculture garden, and our intention is to make steps towards self-sufficiency with food.

We included as many sustainable features as the budget would allow, including:

  • Solar panels
  • 2 x Tesla2 batteries
  • 2 x Rainwater tanks (10,000 litres in total)
  • Double-glazed windows
  • LED lights
  • High-efficiency appliances, including ceiling fans and 7* rated reverse-cycle air conditioners
  • Heat pump for hot water
  • High-rated insulation
  • Native and honey bees
  • Chickens
  • Permaculture-designed edible garden, including edible native grasses
  • Worm farm
