Cocoon House 2021

House Notes – Cocoon House

COCOON HOUSE (Designology’s prototype ‘Convertible Home‘), is open Sustainable House Day. This multi-award winning home is FIRE & STORM resistant. The SEMI-PREFABRICATED light weight structure provides flexibility internally (no load bearing walls), and achieved high levels of recognition winning multiple industry awards for innovation, environmental credentials and overall pragmatic approach to human factor interfaces in rural and remote locations.

The Cocoon House, ‘Convertible Home’ is 2 storeys, with 4-5 bedrooms, 2 full bathrooms, 1 powder-room and large balconies. Cocoon House is off-grid. Awnings are installed on windows for weather protection and security. Designology can build to BAL40.

Designology specialise in understanding the practical uses of environmental systems and processes integrated into an energy efficient structure. We comfortably achieve a minimum 6 – 8 star energy rating in a cool temperate zone through a combination of bulk insulation and thermal mass.
Other uses of technology include:

    • Solar energy sources to provide full or partial off the grid capacity
    • Heat recovery ventilation systems
    • Centralised waste and recycling systems through the use of Biogas conversion technologies
    • Water management through the use of above ground tanks and bladder bags
    • Grey and Black water treatment facilities via onsite or packaged systems

Steel Colourbond CGI (corrugated iron) roof and wall cladding has – durability, low thermal mass, low maintenance, fire and storm resistance and economics. The main superstructure has been designed using lightweight steel framing. Although steel has relatively high embodied energy compared to timber, unlike timber it’s infinitely recyclable.
