Butterfly house 2025

Butterfly house

I previously lived in a four-bedroom Federation house nearby, which was very energy inefficient. With retirement approaching, I decided to build a sustainable home.

I chose Uta Green from Green Design in Hobart as my architect. My brief included:

  • Position: North-facing, linked to my existing garden.
  • Size: Two bedrooms, one bathroom.
  • Materials: Low maintenance, energy-efficient.
  • Heating: Trombe wall, excellent insulation, thermal mass.
  • Accessibility: Wide doorways, no steps, grab handles.
  • Light & Ventilation: Natural light, MVHR system.

The process took three years, and I moved in October 2023. Now 70 and living alone, I find the all-electric, passive solar home with solar PV grid connect both comfortable and low-maintenance, perfectly suited to my needs.
