Eco House – Margi and Charlie 2020

Eco House – Margi and Charlie

This two-bedroom, one-bathroom home was built with strawbale for its unique insulating properties. Orientation of the main living areas towards the north allows-in the sun in winter and not in summer. Thermal mass stores the heat from the sun in winter, and coolth in summer. Timber-framed double glazing not only reduces the heat/coolth transfer through the windows, it also reduces the outside noise from getting in.

A 5kW PV system + 8.4kWh Enphase battery system provides electricity to our home. There is a hot water heat pump for heating water, and underfloor heating and ceiling fans  help regulate room temperatures.

We also have an electric vehicle (Mitsubishi i-MiEV) and a carbon-neutral car that runs on used frying oil.
