Inner City Rental Upgrades

In our LGA 40% of households are rentals. With hotter, longer heatwaves in summer and rising heating & cooling bills, adding some improvements to a rental property is becoming more necessary. But many don’t know where to start, let along know what they can do. As an Architect, Energy Rater & Permaculturist I have investigated options and made a number of affordable upgrades, to experiment, see how beneficial and effective they are, and to make our own home comfortable without relying on mechanical heating and cooling.
Some are temporary, some have been done with the Landlords permission (and our own cost).
There are draught seals, removeable flyscreens, renshade, removeable curtains, honeycomb blinds, bubble wrap, sisalation to the garage door, secondary glazing film, and a portable garden.
(The landlord however has not agreed to our cases for installing a solar PV system or to replace the broken gas stove with an induction cooktop).
As a sustainability advocate for many years I have made many changes to my life and home to reduce my personal impact on the planet, and to show others that it is possible. Living on a small income I do everything as cost effective as possible and strive for a frugal hedonistic lifestyle!
