Over the past decade, this green oasis has evolved into a cool, self-sustaining habitat. Water harvesting has been a key component, utilising both greywater and rainwater collection systems.
In 2006, the bathroom greywater system (shower, handbasin, and bath and washing machine) was installed to feed a retrofitted perched aquifer in the established front garden. This system has helped maintain soil moisture, supporting plant growth and cooling, and reducing reliance on mains water, and avoiding previous water restrictions.
The latest stage of development, completed this summer, integrated stormwater management with a rear deck and paving renovation. Rainwater is now collected from the whole roof and directed into storage tanks for reuse. Additionally, runoff from paved areas is channeled into a newly constructed perched aquifer. This system supplies water to a large grapevine over trellising, further enhancing the home’s sustainable water cycle, and amplifying the’ cooling island’ effect.
