EarthBnb Willunga 2024

House Notes – EarthBnb Willunga

Earthbnb was created in 2023 starting with a month-long workshop with over 50 people working, learning and living in community on the property. The idea came after volunteering on another Earthship workshop in South Australia and spending time in one, we were convinced. We welcomed the opportunity to build the Earthbnb design as a space for short term accommodation. We hope that giving others the opportunity to explore, live and feel the Earthship, that they too would be inspired by new ways of building.

This Earthship contains 300 used tyres, countless bottles and cans and used enormous amounts of earth from the site. EarthBnb is north facing, allowing for passive solar heating. The double glazed windows on the greenhouse at the front of the building heat up with the sun bringing warmth in. The earthtubes at the rear of the building support the cycle of air flow through the building and out the high windows of the greenhouse. The grey water in the bathroom is recycled through planter beds in the greenhouse feeding our beautiful bananas. Large amounts of thermal mass are a feature in this build, constructed into the side of a north facing hill, allowing it to stay at a stable temperature. We have also installed a lot of insulation in the building, as thermal mass alone gets too cold in the winter time. Earthbnb has an off grid solar system with 2kw of solar and 8kwh of batteries and solar hot water evacuated tubing. The green roof catches and directs water through layers of gravel to filter it into a 3000L tank behind the building.
