ECHO Hawthorn is a multi-residential development of 8 townhouses targeting Passivhaus Certification, due for completion in July 2024. This is the first off-the-plan Passivhaus project in Australia. ECHO is important as a proof of concept that Passivhaus is commercially viable, and can be delivered successfully by the private sector. High-performance buildings like ECHO are an important component of moving the building stock towards decarbonisation and lowering energy consumption by the building sector, where 31% of global energy demand goes towards building operation (70% of which are residential buildings).
Applying the Passivhaus standard on a multi-residential scale required a rethink of how projects are conventionally planned, managed and financed, and poses new challenges during construction for sequencing and trade management at scale.
Although we will not be able to have site visits for SHD 2024, a case study of ECHO Hawthorn will be discussed at this year’s Passivhaus Conference in Melbourne, scheduled for 23-24 May 2024, followed by site visits with limited slots on 25 May 2024.
