Electric Alistair Knox House 2025

Electric Alistair Knox House

Electric Alistair Knox House
Nestled in the serene bushland of North Warrandyte, Electric Alistair Knox House, now owned by Ben Russell and Georgia, is a shining example of sustainable living and home electrification. Originally designed and built in 1970 by the renowned architect and builder Alistair Knox, the home was affectionately known as the O’Brien House, a modest two-bedroom “Knox Box” built for the O’Brien family. Today, it has been transformed into an efficient, all-electric haven that blends sustainability with modern living.
Ben Russell, the founder of home electrification pioneers Goodbye Gas, and his partner Georgia purchased the house in 2021 after relocating from Brunswick. Determined to make their new home a beacon of energy efficiency, they immediately began a series of upgrades to make the house more efficient and comfortable to live in.

The Electrification Journey
One of their first priorities was to eliminate the home’s reliance on gas. They removed the original gas heating system, as well as the gas-powered BBQ. The aging electric water heater was replaced with a heat pump and the old cooktop was also replaced with an induction cooktop. To further enhance energy efficiency, all lighting was upgraded to LEDs, and the kitchen received a modern touch with new Fisher & Paykel appliances, including an induction cooktop, fridge, range hood, and double oven.

Harnessing Solar Power
The couple leveraged Ben’s experience in the solar industry to install a 6kW solar system using leftover Tindo solar panels from a previous project. Additionally, they added another 3kW of panels, salvaged during a business relocation. These panels were paired with an Enphase microinverter system to optimise solar energy generation.
Recognising the importance of sustainable transportation, they installed an EV charger to support their electric vehicle, which was essential for their daily commute. Looking ahead, they plan to complete the home’s energy transformation with the installation of a battery system later this year and a second EV.
