Pam and Nathan’s House 2015

House Notes – Pam and Nathan’s House

Eugene Byrne designed and built Pam and Nathans extension in suburban Melbourne using passive solar principles. Thermal mass in the forms of rammed earth and polished concrete store heat in winter and cool in summer. Eaves are designed to exclude summer sun but allow full winter solar access with no shaded glass, as well as provide shelter to the deck. A long-life galvanised steel pergola will allow a wisteria to grow over the deck area.

Double-glazing, insulation in the roof, walls and under the floor extend to the entire new and old house. Ceiling fans, high hopper windows and cross flow ventilation help maintain summer comfort.

To reduce water use a slimline rainwater tank is connected to the laundry, toilet and garden.
