We knew from the time we started designing our home that this was our forever home, our dream home, so we had to get it right. We had to future proof the house and make it is as environmentally friendly as possible. The house has 3 stories cellar/basement, main level and upper level. There are 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, study, home theatre, open plan kitchen/living/dining, scullery, 2 balconies, pool and a large alfresco area with full outdoor kitchen and pizza oven.
We started with a passive solar design so we have large Low E glass windows on the northern side of our home to warm the floor boards and the house in winter. Everyone always comments when they come over how warm it is and how it is to sit on the couch and feel the sun on you when it is freezing outside. We also have large windows in our stairwell on the northern side which not only let in great light but also heat the upstairs level in winter.
Next we put in high grade insulation everywhere including the walls. The house has been very warm all winter with very few occasions where we needed to use our central heating system.
We have 6 KVa of solar panels on the northern side of the roof and in home display so we can see what we are producing energy wise from the panels vs what we are using in the house. This knowledge really helps us be more energy efficient and to know when we can put the dishwasher, laundry and other appliance on during high solar power generation times for the panels.
We have a solar hot water system, 2 large rain water tanks for our garden and pool, access to bore water and a unique underground drip reticulation system which has excellent monitoring and control options via a mobile app.
We have only recently put in our veggie garden and worm farm but they are coming along nicely.
We also love technology so the entire house is smart wired with the Fibaro system so every light in the house and our living room blinds are able to be controlled via our ipads and phones. We also control our entire home theatre system from the ipad using a system called RTI Panel. Our house has multiple wireless Sonos speakers around the house so we can have music playing wherever we are entertaining and our son can listen to his own music using the same system while we listen to ours.
