Graham and Mary 2025

Graham and Mary

Our journey towards an all-electric home began with replacing our gas heater with a reverse cycle air conditioner. The gas heater was unflued, causing noticeable combustion gases and moisture to accumulate, which led to condensation on the windows and eventual mould growth.

In 2019, we installed a 6.6kW solar system to reduce our electricity bills. However, the results were not as impactful as we had hoped. To improve our energy generation, we installed an additional 6.6kW of solar in 2022. With the increased solar capacity, we took the next step by replacing our gas cooker with an induction cooker and switching from gas hot water to an electric hot water system. This allowed us to disconnect from gas entirely.

Most recently, we installed a 26kW battery to maximise the use of our solar production. What started as a mix of gas and electric appliances has now transformed into a fully electric home. The shift was driven by economic, health, and environmental considerations. With solar panels and battery storage, we no longer have a gas bill, our electricity bill is nearly zero, and all our power comes from renewable sources. Additionally, we are able to export surplus renewable energy back into the grid, contributing to a more sustainable future.
