This is a farm property being renovated for a bed and breakfast. It is a refurbishment and retrofit of an existing cottage which originally dates from the 1890s.
The rear part of the cottage has been retrofitted with hemp-lime walling for thermal properties, with a veranda added to shield from the western sun. Other benefits include carbon sequestration. Materials used are natural, recycled, rescued and re-purposed. Double glazing and a composting toilet complete the sustainable attributes.Water will be harvested from three separate buildings.
Visitors will be able to feel the difference in ambient temperature between the old and new sections of the cottage, showcasing the acoustic and insulation properties of hemp. The project is yet to be completed so you will be viewing the work completed to date. You will also be treated to a chat about the many and varied uses and benefits of hemp and will be able to briefly observe a hemp building workshop in progress.
