INDICA HEMP HOUSE, Wilyabrup, WA

Having always been passionate about sustainability and eco-design, designing and building Indica Hemp House had been a passion of mine soon after learning about hempcrete construction at a hemp expo about 6 years ago. After viewing local homes that had been constructed by my builder, and ‘feeling’ how it was inside, I knew my house HAD to be built with this material. My house is constructed of locally grown industrial hemp formulated on-site into hempcrete. Hempcrete has many qualities that make it incredibly eco-friendly and sustainable as a building material including: it provides high thermal insulation; it’s fire resistant; it’s walls breathe; it sequesters CO2 providing a Negative Carbon footprint; it’s inherently airtight; and no waste is produced during its construction. Starting with a passive solar design that was developed for a west facing block, every aspect of it’s function and ongoing life has had careful and considered thought to contribute to sustainability.
