Our mudbrick house is on 30 acres next to Wombat State Forest. It has great passive solar design, solar PV system, solar hot water, large caged veggie garden and orchard. Heated by slow combustion stove with wood sourced from the property. No need for active cooling due to excellent shading, draft proofing, insulation and cross-ventilation. Even an EcoMaster assessment couldn’t find much room for improvement. We live on the energy produced on our property by solar panels and the couple of thousand trees we planted.
Due to the early installation of our 5kW solar PV system, we are always in credit with our electricity bill. And that includes the (overnight) charging of our electric car, a Holden Volt. As we also collect our own rainwater, we don’t have utility bills and the credit even pays for the council rates.
