Karen’s House
This home was a rebuild completed in 2011 built by Aveling homes. The original home was a kit home and sold off the block at a garage sale and rebuilt south of Geraldton, a true example of recycling! Living on the site since 1996 allowed positioning of the new house to take full advantage of solar passive principles and cross ventilation. North facing windows catch the winter suns warmth and the fence shields the summer sun.
Ceiling fans cool the home and 2 Oddysey Ventilation units exchange the air bringing the cooler evening air into the home, flushing out the heat trapped in the home. The alfresco roof keeps west facing windows shaded.
Solar electric panel and energy efficient appliances keep electricity costs low. Water saving toilets, shower heads and tapware conserve water.
90% of the furniture in the home was purchased from gumtree and ebay.
The garden has a Bali theme with pre-loved statues and whimsy. Water thirsty lawn has been replaced with crushed recycled concrete, recycled pavers and composite decking.
The garden has many water wise plants, edible fruits, vegetables and a greenhouse. Reticulation is drip irrigation.
