Just in: Sustainable House Guru Michael Mobbs will be speaking at our place from 11am-12noon!
Our house is a small fibro 1960’s workers cottage converted to thriving family home. We are part of the vibrant King st (un)Intentional Community: a collection of homes with small children supporting one another on a daily basis. This ties in with Bec’s sustainability philosophy: use less, share more!
While we have made minor renovations to our home (including flooring from salvaged hardwood bridge timber) the majority of our retrofit has been to the garden: a sprawling permaculture kids garden with nooks and crannies for the kids to hide, chooks to cuddle and an abundance of ‘little nibbles’ such as acerola cherries, grumichama, cape gooseberries, star fruit and strawberries.
The greatest household improvements we’ve made have been in energy efficiency and behaviour change. We believe it’s not the house that matters so much, it’s how you use it! It’s a small 2 bedroom house and we like it that way, what’s more we like to pack it with people; regularly accommodating up to 9 people! We’ve also reduced our household to one car by purchasing a cargo bike (the neighbourhood ‘bus’ seating up to 5 kids!).
Bec has worked in the field of ethical procurement and every household purchase has been pained over (from the locally made hemp/organic cotton curtains to the Australian made fridge and the toilet paper). She also happens to be a permaculture and sustainability educator.
We look forward to seeing you on Sunday 13th September!
