We bought our home in 2005 in Kotara (a suburb of Newcastle). We have updated our weatherboard home slowly over the years always with a view to living more sustainably. We have added energy saving light globes and appliances including an induction cooktop when we removed the gas connection, water saving shower head and toilet, insulation to the ceiling and walls, ceiling fans, hot water heat pump, reverse cycle air conditioners, floating floor boards, tinted and thickened glass windows and doors at the rear, awnings over the north facing bedrooms, insulated roof over part of the north facing front deck, north facing solar panels on the front of the house, east and west facing solar panels on the carport, two electric vehicles and and a Zappi EV charger which talks to our solar. We also have a Ventis ventilation system which can help heat and cool the home depending on the temperature in the roof. We also have planted natives, and low maintenance non-natives with mulch and have vegetable gardens. The only grass is on the verge which is mowed with an electric lawn mower.
