The Lepus House is a Modern design Strawbale House situated between Geelong and Torquay, in Mount Duneed. The House get’s it’s name from a family of Hares who took residence on the property during the construction, unlike the Hares, this beautiful home is native to it’s environment!
This lovely home faces north for maximum solar gain. Its reclaimed timber eaves are calculated perfectly to give this home maximum warmth from the winter sun, whilst fending off the higher summer sun, keeping the house cool over the hotter months. The Lepus House is fully off-grid, featuring a stand alone solar energy system, stainless steel water tanks, Sanden heat pump and a combustion stove for cooking over winter.
Every material on the House has been thoughtfully selected for it’s enviromental credentials. The home features external straw bale walls, rendered with clay and sand internally and lime and sand externally. All internal walls are cob giving the internal of the house an incredible thermal mass. The Lepus House features traditional timber framing, using mortise and tenon joins. Reclaimed materials are used throughout the home including all the glazing.
