One2six Ashton is the architect’s own house and home-office, west of Margaret River town, high on a slope overlooking the river valley and national park. The building is on three levels, 20m2 cellar, 115m2 ground-floor living, 60m2 atelier, 50m2 roof deck. We aimed to make a contemporary and sustainable architectural statement that suits and sits well in its natural and cultural context.
We used this opportunity to showcase a small-footprint, highly functional, contemporary home and workplace for us that is healthy, sustainable, practical, beautiful and harmonious.
The house has a feel of openness, flow and spaciousness. The building was designed specifically around our personal needs, habits and likes; no spaces are wasted and most have multiple uses.
There are vistas through and out of the building everywhere. Large double-glazed picture windows maximise the long and spectacular views. A fully openable, glass-roofed conservatory is a climate driver and enhances the indoor/outdoor dialogue. Conventional doors have been replaced by large openings that can be partially or fully closed by sliding elements.
The feel of the house is calm, harmonious and serene, achieved through the choice of a small palette of natural colours and materials throughout.
Designed and built by owner, Sorensen Architects.
