Sustainability Hub 2017

Sustainability Hub

This ageing federation style semi-detached cottage has been renovated and revitalised in a demonstration of sustainable renovations on a budget. The cottage has undergone an amazing transformation to showcase sustainable design features in an operational office.

The renovations align with the philosophy of reduce, reuse and recycle.

Many of the design features combine to reduce energy use. Double glazed windows allow natural light into the building and maximise winter heat gain. They also increase the natural air flow through the building and assist cooling in summer. The 2.1 kilowatt solar power system reduces the building’s reliance on electricity generated by coal.

During construction, the reuse of materials was a priority. Doors, frames, windows, architraves and even desks were reused within the building and bricks from internal walls that were removed were used in the rear garden as retaining walls and pathways.

Recycling is also an important facet of the building’s inclusions. The carpet will be recycled at the end of its life to make new carpet backing and the meeting chairs are also composed of recycled materials.

This adaptable office space allows for flexibility in heating, cooling, staff numbers and layout, with options for open plan or small office configuration. Natural light and fresh air creates a happier, healthier workspace.

Join us for tours of the house and community garden.

Visit the Pop Up Repair Cafe Sydney North,  between 10:30am and 12:30pm. Bring in your broken jewellery, shoes and ceramics to be fixed!

You can also take the opportunity to sit down for feedback with a local architect and Willoughby City Council‘s building surveyor on your renovation plans.

Willoughby’s local ukulele troupe will also join us for some great tunes and special requests.
