Yellow Rock Passivhaus is a 3-level, semi off-grid home designed with accessibility, sustainability, and resilience in mind. Built for multi-generational living, the home ensures easy movement for all residents with wide doorways, spacious hallways, and a lift, meeting minimum silver livability standards. Features like no-threshold entries and specially designed bathrooms support aging in place.
Sustainability is at the heart of the design. The home meets the Passive House Plus standard, combining high energy efficiency with integrated solar energy generation. The “Passive Prefab 5” system uses prefabricated wall and roof elements to create an airtight envelope that minimizes energy loss and lowers its environmental impact. A heat pump provides domestic hot water while reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and a Heat Recovery Ventilation (HRV) system works with the air conditioning to cut energy use. These features lower energy bills and reduce the home’s environmental impact.
Renewable energy is a key feature, with a 15kWh solar PV system paired with a 42kWh battery powering up to 100% of the home’s energy needs—even supporting off‐grid living. All‐electric lighting, cooking appliances, and LED fixtures further decrease energy use and emissions. This renewable setup ensures reliable power during extended grid outages.
Water efficiency is maximized through rainwater harvesting into a 120,000‐litre UV‐filtered tank and an onsite wastewater system that recycles water for garden use. Resource efficiency measures have resulted in 94.8% of construction waste being recycled or repurposed, saving 71.7 tonnes of CO₂-e during the build and 142.3 tonnes through recycling and reuse.
To support resilience, the home is designed to withstand bushfires and other environment impacts, incorporating BAL 40-rated, weather-resistant windows, robust insulation, and bushfire resistant cladding. Together, these features create a comfortable, healthy, and future-ready home.
