Council Partners

Sustainable House Day (SHD) returns on Sunday 17 May 2026, and councils across Australia are invited to join this national movement helping residents create more comfortable, affordable and climate-ready homes.

Councils have been integral to the success of Sustainable House Day since the very beginning. For more than two decades, local governments have helped bring SHD to life by championing community education, promoting open homes, hosting events and creating opportunities for residents to learn from one another. In many regions, councils were among the first to recognise the power of neighbour-to-neighbour learning, and their early leadership helped shape SHD into the national movement it is today.

Event Ideas for Councils

To inspire meaningful engagement across your community, here are examples of what councils have successfully delivered:

Social Media Story Series

  • A short video series with your Mayor or sustainability team speaking with local SHD homeowners about the sustainability features in their home – solar, batteries, insulation, heat pumps, rainwater, sustainable gardens, bushfire-readiness and more.

Local Media Feature

  • A front-page story in March/April in local media announcing the council’s partnership with SHD, alongside interviews with featured homeowners and your Mayor to highlight your region’s leadership in climate-ready living.

Council-Led Events

  • Sustainable home bus tours
  • Workshops on electrification, retrofitting or rebates
  • Sessions with local designers, architects or builders
  • Community-village or eco-housing tours
  • “Ask an Expert” pop-ups at libraries or community centres

Community Promotion

  • Share SHD through your council networks—libraries, neighbourhood houses, environmental groups, local clubs and community newsletters—to ensure residents know how to participate.
