Media Release

Sustainable House Day 2026 launches, opening doors to real homes across Australia

Sustainable House Day has officially launched for 2026, returning on Sunday 17 May 2026 and inviting Australians into real homes to see what sustainability looks like in practice.

Presented by Renew, Sustainable House Day is one of Australia’s most trusted, community-led sustainability events. Each year, homeowners and renters across the country open their doors to share practical, lived experience of building, retrofitting and living in homes that are more efficient, affordable and climate-ready.

From architecturally designed sustainable homes to carefully retrofitted weatherboards, efficient apartments, all-electric renovations and climate-resilient rebuilds, Sustainable House Day showcases solutions that improve comfort, lower energy bills and help households prepare for a changing climate.

At the heart of the event are neighbour-to-neighbour conversations. Visitors hear directly from real people about what they did, what it cost, what worked and what they would do differently. This peer-to-peer approach builds trust and turns curiosity into action, with 70 per cent of attendees planning to make changes to their own homes within six months of visiting.

Helen Oakey, CEO of Renew, said Sustainable House Day continues to demonstrate the power of shared, local knowledge.

“Sustainable House Day shows what’s possible when people open their doors and share what they’ve learned,” Oakey said. “These honest conversations help households lower energy bills, improve comfort and make informed decisions about their homes. It’s practical climate action, grounded in everyday experience.”

Alongside open homes, Sustainable House Day includes a national program of community-led events such as tours, workshops, panel discussions and information sessions, creating spaces for people to connect, ask questions and explore solutions together.

National in scope but community-led at heart, Sustainable House Day turns storytelling into action, helping Australians take their next step towards more affordable, sustainable and climate-resilient homes.

Applications to open a home for Sustainable House Day 2026 are now open – closing in early March. Tickets on sale March 23!
