About this home

Our home was carefully designed to be ‘green’ : eco-conscious, energy efficient, beneficial to the planet, bespoke and beautiful.

Strawbale construction is a sustainable choice and has environmental benefits including walls that breathe and have great insulating properties. They are more sound proof, use less toxic chemicals and have a beautiful organic look. Greenhouse gas emissions are very low and once rendered, strawbales have a very low fire and pest risk. The compression of the bale itself minimizes oxygen availability thus fire risk, outperforming conventional construction.

Our home was designed using passive solar principals to achieve thermal comfort with minimal heating and cooling by using insulation, airtightness, appropriate window design, ventilation and heat recovery. It is situated on the block to take advantage of the site and climate.

Design wise, our home was inspired by medieval French farmhouse architecture, Japanese architecture and Pueblo style homes, each having massive wood components, ceiling beams and posts that create a striking counterpart to the smooth hand rendered walls.

Our home has taken us 23 years to build and complete. It has been a labour of many emotions but mostly love and patience..all driven by the intention to create a family home that has a peaceful and gentle soul. In all honesty, it has given us as much as we have given it. It really is a calming oasis, with it’s curves and textures, glorious light and expansive views.

Q & A

What motivated you to build or retrofit sustainably?
I would have to say the hydronic central heating made a huge difference to the comfort level of the home. The radiant heating is fantatsic. It is quiet and heats all parts of the house and the ceiling fans help to disperse the heat around. The hydonic system currently runs on gas but the radiator panels have been designed to allow for a heat pump. Even though the house is solar passive design it still requires a top up of heating during the winter. There are manys days durinmg winter the temperature in the house can reach 26 degress without the heating on
There were many "wish we'd known" and here are some things we have learned "Keep it simple". The less complicated the design the quicker and easier it will be to build Understand your limitations when it comes to skills and experience Do your research and ask alot of questionsHave a realistic budget and then add 30% minimum. Too many people think being an owner builder you will save you alot of money. This is partly true if you are doing all the labour but the materials is usually where all the outlay is. Of course this will depend on your construction method and fit outCelebrate the wins and have a day off every now and againProject management is extremely important. If you have no skills in project management then sign up for a course you will not regret it
