About this home

This little 2-bedroom brick-veneer house has 2 bathrooms. I have replaced one of the conventional toilets with a composting loo: a Green Loo CF4. The main motivation was to reduce water use and preserve a valuable resource. I got approval from the local council to install the loo and to process the resulting waste onsite (the material emptied from the CF4 at 3-monthly intervals goes into a dedicated compost bin for 3 months and is then used to fertilise the fruit trees in the garden.
In addition, I have installed a greywater system that takes water from the showers and laundry: a Gator Pro Grey Water Unit with a Grey Flow Rotor. The water goes to the front and back garden via an Irrigrey 8 mm drip kit.
I have been through some challenges with the composting loo – in particular, an infestation of bathroom moths – but have now worked out how to manage it to keep it free of pests. I am very happy with the system.

Q & A

What motivated you to build or retrofit sustainably?
A desire to save water and preserve a valuable resource
Swapping the conventional loo for a composting loo – I can use the loo guilt free!
I wish I'd followed the instructions more closely in the first place to avoid a bathroom-moth infestation (much easier to keep them at bay than to remove them once they are established)
I'd like to find a composting loo that could replace my other conventional loo (which doesn't have enough underfloor space for a CF4)
