About this home

When I first thought about adding a secondary dwelling to my backyard in Keperra, Brisbane, I imagined a little retreat for myself. But as life changed, so did the plan. It was going to be for my mum at one point, and eventually it became a home for my dad, Bob, who’s living with Parkinson’s. My friend and designer-builder, Davo Pauli, worked with me to create something that would suit all of us, and I’m so grateful for how it’s turned out.

The one-bedroom home now sits where an old shed once stood — a place full of jam sessions and good memories. We reused as much of it as possible: the timber trusses became raked ply ceilings, and the old roof sheeting now lines the walls. It feels like a quiet nod to the past.

The garden was just as important. Davo carefully worked around the established trees and positioned the new build to protect the southern garden, creating a peaceful little pocket near the fire pit. From the back deck, I enjoy a morning coffee, watching the sunrise reflected in Dad’s windows.

Most importantly, Dad loves it. It’s designed for his needs, wheelchair-friendly, with wide spaces, cork flooring, and an accessible bathroom. Seeing him comfortable and happy here means everything. What began as a simple idea has become something deeply meaningful for our family.

Q & A

What motivated you to build or retrofit sustainably?
Health, climate, comfort and family. Really, to create something special.
Preserving the native garden and repurposing materials that were beautiful and sentimental.
I wish I’d known how emotional the process would be. I expected decisions about materials and budgets, I didn’t expect how much memory and meaning would be tied up in the space. Rebuilding where we once had a treasured music shed brought up a lot. My advice? Leave room in your timeline (and your heart) for that emotional layer. It’s not just a build, it’s personal.
I’d add a full kitchen and go back to my original plan for a larger fridge. The bigger fridge was actually in the early plans, but somewhere along the way we thought dad would not move in and I second-guessed it and downsized. I also never included a full kitchen because I assumed the space would feel tighter than it does. Once it was built, I realised it’s far more spacious than I’d imagined. A proper kitchen would give Dad even more independence and make the space feel completely self-contained.It’s a good lesson in not underestimating what’s possible, and trusting the scale of the design rather than playing it too safe.
