About this home

The West Brunswick Sustainable House is a Californian Bungalow style weatherboard house built in 1929. It is home for Stuart McQuire and Wendy Orams. Without renovating or rebuilding, the house has progressively been given a green makeover for environmental sustainability. The West Brunswick Sustainable House has gained a national and international profile for its role in pioneering environmental technologies and sustainable living. In 2026 the house is celebrating 30 years of grid-connected solar electricity.

The house is set in a native and permaculture style garden, and features grid connected solar electricity, solar battery storage, electric vehicle charging, reverse cycle heating / cooling, heat pump hot water, rainwater tanks, water recycling, veggie garden, composting and chooks. There is also an office in the converted bungalow out the back.

Q & A

What motivated you to build or retrofit sustainably?
Environmental concerns including climate and water. Comfort and health.
Grid-connected solar electricity, almost no electricity bills for 30 years, some income from solar export. Abundant energy produced where we live, and available when we need it (now with a battery). It helped us reduce our greenhouse gas emissions from energy dramatically, enabled us to get off gas, and charge an electric vehicle.
