This renovated home is a delightful example of what is possible for a home that was ‘just a little too small’ and also a little too dark!
The original home had served the owners well but it was poorly connected to the rear yard, suffered from poor internal flow and had a central bathroom in just the wrong spot and with serious water issues.
A small addition added two compact bedrooms over a new multipurpose space while the existing plan was reconfigured to utilise an existing clerestory window to draw light into the centre of the home and down through a new timber stair to the lower entry.
The external appearance saw new lightweight cladding in places while retaining the brick veneer in some sections. Where openings were adjusted, the opportunity was seized to remove the bricks, wrap, insulate and clad the building to improve internal comfort while also improving aesthetics.
A new roof allowed for improved insulation while new windows bring huge comfort and acoustic benefits to day to day life. Decentralised ventilation units with heat recovery provided filter outdoor air without the energy penalty of opening windows on cold/hot or noisy days.
The tour will focus on the strategies used to achieve high levels of comfort when retrofitting existing buildings. A short talk will cover passive design, construction techniques and ventilation strategies. The architect will be present so bring any questions along.
