Q & A

What motivated you to build or retrofit sustainably?
Mornington Peninsula Shire created the Eco Living Display Centre at Mt Martha to inspire and educate the community on practical, achievable ways to live more sustainably and reduce environmental impacts.
Strengthening the home’s thermal shell—through high‑performance insulation, draft-stopping and internal / external window treatments such as glazing / shading—has made the biggest difference, and when paired with full electrification (solar PV, battery storage and efficient electric systems), it transformed the Eco Living Display Centre into a stable, comfortable, community space with dramatically reduced running costs and year‑round thermal comfort.
Our ‘wish we’d known’ moment was realising that you can’t possibly have every answer before starting a home upgrade. What you can do is research, talk to people who’ve already made the journey, and get clear on your own priorities and circumstances. That’s exactly why the Eco Living Display Centre exists: to help people navigate choices, understand what really matters, and learn from trained volunteer guides who not only understand the systems on display, but have lived through upgrades in their own efficient homes. Technology moves fast and can feel overwhelming, but the core principles of an efficient, sustainable home are surprisingly straightforward—once you understand them, they give you the confidence to take action without waiting for the ‘perfect’ moment.
