Talks and house tours at Narara Ecovillage

Talk 1 (morning): Retrofitting existing homes sustainably for energy efficiency and thermal comfort
We will explore options for reducing energy use in the home, including in rented premises, covering areas such as insulation, sealing gaps, water heating, air conditioning and so on. Reducing energy use does not have to come at the expense of comfort and many options are easy and inexpensive to do. Come and find out more from our two expert speakers.
Speakers:

  • Dr. John Shiel (sustainable building expert)
  • Kel Lupis BA, MBA (home energy efficiency and thermal comfort assessor)

Plus visit to a recently retrofitted Queenslander featured on Restoration Australia.

Talk 2 (afternoon): Setting up a microgrid and community battery
Narara Ecovillage has an embedded network with a connection to the national grid. The homes in the Village are energy efficient and on most days produce excess electricity from their solar panels which we store in our 430 kWh community battery. We installed a special transformer so we can export all our surplus power to the grid. Setting up the grid and battery was not an easy task but is now operating successfully. Both Dave and Toby were central to its development so please come and hear from them about the challenges and benefits of taking on this project.
Speakers:

  • Dave Parris (electrical engineer and member of NEV Power team)
  • Toby Roxburgh (on Zoom) (electrical and electronics engineer and consultant)

Plus visit to the microgrid and battery.

Narara Ecovillage is also opening seven homes for Sustainable House Day including guided tours. Registration essential.

The community coffee cart will be open for food until 1.30pm.  Please pre-order lunch on arrival.

Footprint Garden Farm and Brick Veneer electrified and retrofitted home – Willunga

Join us at Willunga Environment Centre for an overview and talk about the properties and then take a short walk or drive to visit both of these amazing properties.

Footprint Garden Farm: “Electrify Everything” may be the latest catchphrase, but we can demonstrate that we were able to achieve it with a minimum of fuss! A smaller footprint constraint meant using a ‘loft style’ house plan, minimising waste space. We incorporated insulation with a low-cost self-designed wall, sub-wall and roof system; plus, high thermal mass, including a virtual ‘earth-coupled’ slab. We can demonstrate how simple actions like changing the HW heat pump timer and running appliances (including ‘pre-conditioning’) while the sun is shining, help sustainable living.

Willunga Brick veneer electrified and retrofitted home: This project home, built in the 1970s, was typical of the era with no wall insulation and minimal in the roof. However we did rotate the design so the living areas faced north. Improvements over the decades include solar hot water, PV panels on the roof, blow in insulation, rainwater storage, air-conditioner for heating, double glazing, an EV, a storage battery. Electric mower, BBQ and bikes continue the story.

Webinar: Repower and Save – a Game Changer

A webinar demonstration of an amazing online tool that enables you to easily research the actual costs and benefits of different ways to electrify your home … without giving your contact details until YOU are ready for the conversation. Repower Mornington Peninsula shares an innovative way to explore and research your options on your journey towards home sustainability.

Designed specifically for Peninsula residents, Repower and Save makes things easy for you and connects you with local trusted business that have partnered with Repower. The interactive tool allows you to toggle different components, e.g. heat pump, induction cooktop, solar panels, battery, so you can instantly compare costs, energy savings and payback periods on your choices.

A key advantage is that your contact details remain private until you are ready to move forward. You can explore options and make informed decisions at your own pace, without pressure from sales reps. You contact them only when you are ready to get more information specific to your situation.

For those looking to take control of their energy future, Repower and Save is truly a game changer – a great way to start reducing your energy bills and carbon emissions.

Please note: The Repower and Save tool is only available for residents living on the Mornington Peninsula, Vic.

Sustainable House Day for Renters – Cool, Green, and Energy Smart

For this year’s Sustainable House Day, we’re hosting an event tailored specifically for renters—showcasing practical, low-cost solutions to improve comfort and energy efficiency in rental homes.

Instead of opening homes, we will be using our Community Hub to give demonstrations on ways to make rental homes ‘cool’ and help renters save on their energy bills.

Event features:

  • Panel Discussion: Energy Hardship & Advocacy – What is the impact of high energy costs on renters, the need for policy changes to improve rental housing efficiency, and how tenants can advocate for better rights and support.
  • Window Tinting Demonstration
  • Using Indoor & Balcony Plants for Shade
  • Sustainable Furnishings & Fabrics
  • Energy Efficiency Conversations – COOLmob and local real estates

This event will provide renters with actionable steps to enhance thermal comfort, reduce energy bills, and create more sustainable living spaces—all without major modifications or landlord approval.
